Never Again: What You Do Matters

Same title as on the Giulia Geranium blog. It's this year's (American) theme for Holocaust Remembrance Days (19-26 April). For more details please go there. Worlds collide but sometimes it's too much--even for me. (photo credit)

“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

— Elie Wiesel

Please visit the cleverest of Canadian pups for her fascinating post today. I know (or knew) many people who were at Terezín & have heard about the opera Brundibár, but have not seen the documentary about which she writes so beautifully. The outside world calls, so please visit The Clever Pup & also the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) for more archival material than you could hope to use in a lifetime. Some of it is newly-released & I believe some is online now for non-scholarly (in the strictest sense) work.

Thanks for this post and especially the Elie Wiesel quote - he never fails to put things in a memorable way.

A nice reminder to revisit the issues of Racism and rememberance. IL opened a Holocaust museum in the last year. Last weekend, President Clinton pointed out to the crowd gathered that it was probably the last museum that museum and memorial that will open which includes the direct input of Holocaust survivors. It's becoming so much more important to tend to this.

Thanks Anna. Yes, it has been a race against time, that's for sure.

I saw Clinton's comments & have followed the building of the museum closely. Most people I speak with are stunned to find out how much archival material exists.

What makes me so very sad & furious is when I take current survivor of war crimes/genocide (big fights about nomenclature, as you no doubt know)testimony, it's the same (racist) story over & again. Just the names have changed.

Beyond that, I don't know how publicized this is here in the States...but there are Holocaust survivors living in abject poverty. Imagine living through such horrors & ending up hungry? This has been happening in Israel & I don't know where else. I keep putting "look up..." on pads of paper & there's simply no time/no technology. Which reminds me to send a message to people-who-know-these-things.

Thanks for the note...svs
