The Girl in the Red Beret

Life's cinematic moments. Here's one captured in Melbourne by Andrew of Cuba Gallery. Click through to read his description. I'm posting this because I saw it a year ago but it just rolled around in my memory. Then, of course, I went off to look at berets, red & otherwise. Picasso & Mary Cassatt have girls in red berets. There are photographs all over the place with the title. People posing in Paris mostly. Not a small thing, either, is that the last post has Halloween in the title. So let's move on, even if it's at a limp.

PS: I vaguely recall a tweet by Simon about Melbourne's design & Paris. Enlighten us, will you, Simon? Because I looked for something but not a lot came up. And I am in a wild hurry.

Did I ever tell you that I inherited my aunt's 14 berets? We are a hat-head family. Love this photo.

Nooooo. Fourteen? I can only find a tan one in the apt. which makes me look even more pale than usual (not in a good way). Hat-head family, good one:)

What a cinematic shot. Renoir's Two sisters on the terrace has a red beret of sorts.

There is not a lot of history on it but if you dig deep you will find that the architecture of the early buildings, the design of the wide boulevardes Eg St Kilda Road, and design of the gardens and bridges were based on Paris. The Yarra river is a feature of Melbourne as is the Seine in Paris, and if you google photos of the two you will see a comparison of the bridgework.

Unlike Sydney, Melbourne is a structured city with a design. Sydney simply grew out of the convict settlements and has poor roads and really an ad hoc design to it. Saved only by the harbour, the Opera house and the Bridge.

Melbourne is the business capital of Australia, as was even back then....

:o)

ps, and Melbourne has great wine bars, eateries, and its weather is a bit like Paris, Sunny one minute then, overcast, then back to sunny again...

Pleople dress better in Melbourne too. My uncle worked for Lempreire which sold fine wool to the world, so Melnbourne is the fashion capital of Australia

I love the things you find for this blog and now I'm going to dream of red berets all day. One of my favourite colours too. Last year I bought my very first one in turquoise but Catherine's comment has inspired me to start a collection.

Red beret brings to mind Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Red Hat (or was it woman?), at the National Gallery. Do you know how one of the very few Vermeer paintings ended up in DC?

Saluti da Firenze!
