Making an Exit

Every exit is an entrance somewhere else.--Tom Stoppard

Making an exit, planned or not, is almost always an option. Hold your head high while doing so. If you are pulled together with flattering lipstick & comfortable (but pretty!) shoes, it really helps. Armor thyself. Do not run away as if on fire. (Unless being chased by a lunatic. If you are on fire, believe me, you have other things to worry about. Remember: stop, drop, & roll.)

I've slunk through bookshop & library shelves, wound around corridors, exiting through a catering area more than once. Yes, I was on the ground. Once I crawled out of a club on my hands & knees through the kitchen. (I no longer do these things.) This is in response to a friend who told me that he cannot attend an event because of someone's possible appearance. But I've done the same, so I can't wag my finger at him. (I did not advise him to wear lipstick, no.)

(I'm turning off comments for this post only to relieve people from feeling imposed upon to make them.) OK, pressure's on. Just opened the comments.

Week's End - Mirage/Mirare

Some additional The English Patient stills (by brilliant Phil Bray). I've used them to help with some research/writing prompts & as I'm metaphorically stuck in the desert/Middle East (& Italy), they continue to resonate. The shots in the Cairo apartment were not done there but I could swear they were shot in the Garden City quarter. Those maniacal production artists.

By the way, I recently read the late (so sad) Anthony Minghella's award-winning screenplay & it is well worth buying for any would-be adapters, fans of the film & novel. You'll find that many things you think are in the novel are not - they're in the screenplay; since it didn't bother Michael Ondaatje, it sure doesn't bother me. I am sorry there aren't more stills available of the Hana/Kip story thread; I have some in folders, but that can wait. I'm beyond indulging myself here. [many images from

Have a great weekend.

Water Cure

Why the mini-surge of people following (Julie) on Twitter? What has someone tweeted in my name, oh man. Can she have her own account & I can bow out? I rarely go there, peeps. I'm a great re-tweeter, though. [Medicine bath by Nina Leen, LIFE archives]

Vanity

You must not find symbols in everything you see. It makes life impossible.
--Oscar Wilde

No bloody kidding.

Mirror, mirror

Models and Queensborough Bridge, New York by William Klein, 1962. Not sure if this was in Vogue but he did some work there. He went to live in Paris a long time ago & is well-known in Europe but not as much here. Went on to make films. Obviously I'm not The Clever Pup; she would have this all worked out & written up beautifully. Via a scan from my 2007 Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, New York desk agenda. The text says this was printed in 1988, so it wouldn't have been in a magazine most likely. I remember liking Klein's photos; there's a lot of distortion, chaos, confusion. Maybe he drank too much coffee, too. My mother wore clothes like this...in fact, she made them quite often (or had someone else do it when she sewed our clothes).
